| Communication Lab FAQ
Q: What age groups do you study?
A: We observe babies from birth to 24 months of age.
Q: How long do the studies take?
A: Our studies require one visit only and take about 10 minutes to complete.
Your entire visit will last no longer than 30 minutes.
Q: Who runs the studies?
A: Dr. Athena Vouloumanos is the principal investigator of the studies. Professors,
highly trained graduate and undergraduate students, and research scientists conduct
all studies.
Q: Will I be with my child?
A: Yes, you will be with your child at all times. During the study, your
child will be sitting on your lap.
Q: How exactly do you understand what
my child is learning at such a young age?
A: Infants can't tell us what they think with words, so we use indirect
methods. Sometimes we measure looking times to various visual displays,
because infants get bored with repetition and recover interest to novelty.
This tells us whether babies can tell the difference between two sounds, or
whether they are surprised by something they hear or see. We can also find
out what kinds of sounds babies prefer to listen to because they will pay
more attention when these sounds are played.
Q: Can I get results for my baby?
A: All of our studies examine results across a large group of babies, so
there are no individual results for a particular child. Studies usually
take a few months to complete, but feel free to give us a call to ask about
the outcome of a study in which your child participated, or ask us if you come
in for a second visit.
