Research

     Dr. Kevin LaBar graduated Summa Cum Laude from Lafayette College, where he received his B.A. in Mathematics and Psychology in 1990. In 1996, he completed his Ph.D. in Neural Science at New York University’s Center for Neural Science in the laboratory of Dr. Joseph LeDoux. From 1996-1997, he was a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Dr. Elizabeth Phelps at Yale University in the Department of Psychology. He then served as an Instructor at the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center, Northwestern University Medical School, under the directorship of Dr. Marsel Mesulam from 1997-1999. There, he received a Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) for his work on “Functional mapping of emotional memory processes.” In 1999, Dr. LaBar became an Assistant Professor at Duke University’s Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. He has since obtained an additional NARSAD Young Investigator Award for his research on “Spatiotemporal dynamics of emotional memory networks,” a pilot research grant on “Emotional priming as a potential marker of amygdala function in early-stage Alzheimer’s disease” from Duke University’s Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Center, a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award, as well as a National Institutes of Health PHS RO1 award. He has lectured on topics in Neuropsychology, Alzheimer’s Disease, Emotions and the Brain, and Cognitive Neuroscience.
